Michael Larson, founder of the startup MindRocket, came up with the idea for the Sleep Shepherd after his daughter was diagnosed with a sleep disorder. In an effort to find a drug-free solution, the Colorado-based electronic engineer and inventor set to work to design a device that could help you fall asleep, and stay asleep, without having to rely on prescription medicines.
The Sleep Shepherd Blue is a revamped version of the original ‘beanie-hat’ styled Sleep Shepherd, which debuted on Kickstarter in 2014. The ‘Blue’ features numerous improvements, including a sleeker headband form factor, REM sleep tracking and a companion smartphone app.
How does the Sleep Shepherd Blue work?
Sleep Shepherd Blue is an advanced sleep tracker that not only measures and monitors yours sleep behaviour, it’s also a sleep-promoting device that actively works to help people with insomnia and general sleep issues.
It does this by using ‘binaural beats‘, low-frequency audio tones that are directed into each ear by small speakers embedded in the Sleep Shepherd’s headband.
Binaural beats have been shown to have a direct effect on influencing brainwave patterns. These specialized tones, in combination with Sleep Shepherd’s built in EEG sensors, create a biofeedback system that uses real-time brainwave data to to help constantly optimize your sleep cycle.
Sleep Shepherd Blue is made of the adjustable headband which houses thin speakers for each ear and conductive fabric EEG sensors to monitor your brain activity. The headband is constructed of an ultra-lightweight breathable fabric that’s designed to be comfortable and to not disturb your sleep.
Unlike many wearables that utilize only movement sensors to track your sleep, Sleep Shepherd Blue incorporates start of the art EEG (electroencephalograph) sensors to monitor your sleep patterns.
Manufactured by bio-sensor pioneers NeuroSky, Sleep Shepherd’s EEG sensors can monitor the frequency of your brainwaves to determine whether you’re in light, deep or REM sleep.
In addition, a 3-axis accelerometer can detect sleep orientation (time spent in left, right or back sleeping positions) and motion events to enhance the data from the EEG readings.
The companion app, available on iOS and Android, provides detailed readouts of your sleep data, so you can drill down into your sleep trends on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
